Manufacturing Prototypes

Since the idea for the Pico toy was conceived, a considerable amount of effort has been invested to make the toy suitable for manufacture.

The design itself is distilled to reduce complexity in the manufacturing process, making the task of bringing the toy to market on entrepreneurs part as easy as possible.

We focused our efforts on optimising the design for injection moulding, with prototypes also covering FDM & SLA manufacturing techniques.

Mass production would reduce cost of pieces substantially, and from our experimental efforts in milled aluminium using a desktop injection moulding machine, the full piece is suitable to be injection moulded inexpensively, with minimal consideration of draught angles or further complexity.

The design of the injection moulding process for both blocks and face plates & further permutations is therefore kept simple.

Prototypes

Manufacturing Prototypes exist as a proof of concept. These inexpensive production samples could be scaled to full production with minimal complexity.

Assembly

Assembling the simple individual

injection moulded pieces

then creates the fully formed cube.

One Piece Mould

The potential to get the base cube injection moulded in one piece also exists, using a 6 part mould.

A 6 part mould would be more complicated to set up, but if the wish were to arise to produce one solid component, this would also be a possibility.

One solid cube may be preferable as the builder would not have to assemble each cube individually before starting to play.
